Risk Based Inspection Planning & Management

Are you addressing the right risk?

Operations in the oil and gas, petrochemical, fertilizer, and chemical industries are high risk, with potential hazard to personnel, property, and environment. A structured approach is required to ensure piping systems, pressure vessels, and storage tanks are safe for operation when exposed to a corrosive environment. The ability to prioritize and address high-risk items can prevent risks of fire, explosions, and shutdowns all whilst saving the asset owners time and cost.

Piping systems, tanks, pressure vessels, and associated equipment are exposed to a corrosive environment that can activate degradation such as corrosion, fatigue, and mechanical damage, leading to corresponding threats of fire, explosions, and shutdowns. These associated threats need to be identified and managed systematically to safeguard life, environment and property.

Traditional inspection methodologies work on a fixed-period basis without considering the risk, while in contrast RBI, the risk is viewed as the product of the consequence and probability of a failure event. This ensures the equipment with high risks are prioritized and focused for inspection activities to reduce the risk level.

Asset owners who have sought DNV’s support in RBI implementation have successfully shown reduced downtime of plants and maintenance cost with improved process availability.

How can we help?

There is a structured way to manage the associated economic, safety and environmental risks in a systematic, documented and recognized approach. DNV has developed and offers a full range of RBI planning and management services for piping, tanks and pressure vessels.

The objective of the RBI planning and management activities is to ensure safe and cost-optimized integrity management of containment systems on the plant, and thus, reduce the downtime, maximize the availability and production regularity while ensuring the safety of personnel.

The inspection management system also ensures an efficient experience transfer between different disciplines and locations and is a tool for continuous improvement.

The methodology is in accordance with recognized standards such as API 580, API 581, DNV RP G101 and the upcoming PR EN 16991
